Look at Yourself

Look at your hands.
You might think they are yours alone,
But they have touched the land
And lived as flesh and bone
And worn wedding bands
Long before you owned them.

Look at your feet.
Imagine all of those
Who have tapped a beat
And hated their baby toes
And walked barefoot in the summer heat
Much the same as you do.

Look at your lips.
Feel the ancient power
As you drink with careful sips
And taste bitter, sweet, or sour
And kiss another's lips.
Then try to devour
The thought that lips like yours
Have spoke a thousand tongues.

Look at yourself.
You are the fragments
Of countless souls,
Melded into one unique
You.
